About this event

Members will gather at Casa do Frango for an evening with Hekayyatna, a community driven production house bringing people together through stories, events, and conversations around the ideas shaping our lives today.

As part of their Hekayyatna Asks series, we’ll explore one of history’s most enduring questions: Why Do Great Civilizations Fall?

Inspired by the ideas of 14th-century historian and thinker Ibn Khaldun, the evening will explore why civilizations rise, what holds societies together, and what causes them to eventually decline.

We’ll begin with a short interactive prompt to introduce the theme and get everyone talking, followed by an introduction to Ibn Khaldun and some of his key ideas from Al Shaibani, Co-Founder and Head of Production at Hekayyatna.

From there, the conversation will continue over dinner, with members discussing the questions in smaller groups before coming back together to share their thoughts.

Questions we'll explore:

Do hard times create strong people, and good times create weak ones?
Does comfort make us softer, as individuals and as a society?
Is the very thing that makes a society great also what eventually contributes to its decline?
What holds a group together: shared belief, shared identity, shared purpose, or something else?
What can Ibn Khaldun’s ideas tell us about the societies we live in today?
