London May bank holiday 2026: what to actually do with three days off
Round-up of the May bank holiday weekend in London 2026 — markets, festivals, day trips, late-night warehouses and the events worth your three-day break.
Three days off, weather usually somewhere between "summer is coming" and "absolutely lashing", and the rest of the country either at a festival or stuck on the M25. London on a May bank holiday is properly underrated.
Here is the plan — Saturday through Monday, with options for whatever the sky is doing.
The festivals
Cross The Tracks in Brockwell Park is the main London bank holiday festival — soul, funk, jazz, big lineups every year, around £75 a ticket and worth it. City Splash in Brockwell the day after for reggae and dancehall. The whole Brockwell Park festival run usually has good food trucks and proper sound systems.
If you want something free: Hampstead Village Bank Holiday Fair is a low-key thing on the Heath extension — local stalls, music, kids stuff, no ticket. Good for a Sunday afternoon hang.
The big one: All Points East's opening weekend usually lands either on this bank holiday or the next, check dates. Victoria Park, big bookings, around £85.
Saturday in town
Markets and food: Hackney Wick has been doing pop-up markets along the canal that are actually good. Maltby Street is open Saturday and Sunday. Brick Lane if you can stomach the crowd.
If you want to do central: the Tate Modern has its big spring show open by now and the Members' room on the 6th floor is the best £85/year you will spend in London if you go more than three times.
Free Saturday option: Greenwich Park for the views and the Royal Observatory. Walk down to Greenwich Market for lunch, ferry back from North Greenwich Pier on the Uber Boat — the Thames Clipper is genuinely a brilliant way to see London and it is on the Oyster.
Saturday night
Big nights this weekend: fabric does a proper bank holiday Saturday, usually a longer set list and a 5am close that the regulars know about. The Cause in Tottenham Hale runs a Saturday warehouse vibe. Phonox in Brixton is consistently on form.
For something quieter: Sadler's Wells if you want dance, Ronnie Scott's for jazz, Soho Theatre for a 9:30 comedy slot.
Eating: Mountain, Lyle's, Brat, Sessions Arts Club, St. John. The reliable list. Walk-in seats at the bar at any of those if you turn up at 6 or 9:30.
Sunday
The Sunday plan: late breakfast at Pophams in Hackney or Bread Ahead in Borough, a long walk somewhere green, a Sunday roast, and a quiet evening.
Walks: Hampstead Heath, Richmond Park, the Thames Path from Kew to Hammersmith, or Walthamstow Wetlands if you want birds and water and no tourists at all.
Roasts that will be busy but worth it: The Marksman, The Camberwell Arms, The Pelican, The Anchor & Hope.
Monday
Bank holiday Monday is the day to do the touristy thing without tourists, weirdly — the museums are quieter than a Saturday because everyone has gone home. The V&A spring show, the British Museum without the queue, Sir John Soane's Museum on Lincoln's Inn Fields if you have never been (free, mental, you will love it).
Or: get on a train. Brighton in 50 minutes, Margate in 90 (worth it for Dreamland, the Turner Contemporary and a fish-and-chips), Hastings if you want fewer crowds, Whitstable for oysters.
For events specifically across the weekend, the London this-week page on Rifio has the live list, and the free things to do page filters by free admission.
What to skip
Anything advertised as "London's biggest" anything. Notting Hill on the Saturday (but it is fine on the Monday). The Shard. Any pub that posts about "bank holiday vibes" on Instagram.
Have a sound one.

Brockwell Park festival weekend is mental for the surrounding pubs, get there early or queue.

Whitstable oysters and a pint of Shepherd Neame > anything indoors in London on a sunny bank holiday

Found this via rifio, the bank holiday filter on the events page is sound, found a free thing in Peckham I would not have heard about.

The Cause is in its last year, allegedly. Go this weekend if you have not been.
